I have an original copy of this book that was given to my mother by her employer back in 1940 when she worked as a nanny. I've used some of the recipes for insect control and I can attest that pokeweed root keeps out the waterbugs & roaches and you can pick it for free almost anywhere. Although some of the ingredients and quantities are not translatable to modern norms, it's a true insight into life 100 years ago when you couldn't get a lot of things we take for granted. We can just buy vanilla or immitation at the corner grocery...then you made do with rosewater or Madeira wine because it was so rare & expensive. How to make soap and boil your laundry, things we've forgotten which were how things were done. Makes me so grateful for the vacuum cleaner. Don't read how to make cottage cheese if you have a weak stomach because you start with a calves stomach. I love this book and have a ball reading it.Product details
