Nick Rushton's Synology Setup Guide is a noteworthy improvement over the documentation that "accompanies" my DS1815+. It wades thru the frivolous options of setup and guides you to a good configuration that would work for an average user - someone looking for shared or simply more disk space on their home network. I particularly appreciate that it spared me the "See DSM Help" reference at every step in the Synology Users Guide. Unfortunately it didn't offer me much detail on the somewhat technical issues I face: how to best configure raid groups versus volumes versus iSCSI targets for other servers without wasting disk capacity, how to secure the NAS with an SSL certificate, or how to integrate it into an Active Directory and use the AD for authentication and access controls. For the price, it's a better guide than what the manufacturer offers; it's just not a "deep dive" for more advanced configuration cases.Product details

It is helpful setup guide for Synology NAS
If you’re new to Synology...buy this book and save yourself time and set it up correctly the first time. Worth twice the price- seriously just buy it- other wise you’ll miss half the potiental of your NAS initially. It’s not perfectly written, but it’s worth the effort.
I'm very pleased with this guide. I am using it to configure my DS1815+ with 4 6TB WD Red drives. The user guide that came with the unit is OK and got me setup initially. But I found myself looking for a little more handholding than the user guide provided.
After searching , I ended up purchasing this guide - partly because I could download it and start reading it instantly. But besides that, I like the level of detail the "Synology NAS Setup Guide" provides. I work in the IT field but am very limited in the world of networking. Not only does this guide tell me "What" to do. It gives good suggestions and good examples. I'm the type of person that learns best by association (examples) - something that I can relate to. This book gives me plenty of that.
I'm still setting up my NAS. However I am more comfortable doing so by having this resource.
My Synology DS1815 was very easy to set up. The NAS Setup Guide gave me the courage to do it myself. Very informative and a great reference manual when you need to re-remember how to do all the things the NAS is capable of doing. Wouldn't be without it.
Excellent guide for those of us who are do-it-yourselfers with no IT support staff. Mr. Rushton provides step-by-step guidance for selecting RAID level and installing and configuring DSM. The book contains enough information about networking for a person with general computer knowledge to understand and follow the connectivity steps and security options.
This eBook contains 178 illustrations - primarily screen captures - that make the guide very easy to follow. However, the illustrations weren't very clear on my Paperwhite. The author recognizes the potential for that problem. The book's Intro contains an email address to contact the author. With proof of purchase from , he will email a PDF file containing all the illustrations that are crisp, clear, and easy to see. I submitted a request late on a Friday night and received the PDF in less than 2 hours.
The "Synology NAS Setup Guide" is exactly what I needed to feel confident enough to install two Synology DiskStations.
I have familiarity with most computers in general. But when I got my 1st NAS device, I decided it couldn't hurt to have some hands-on advice. Nick Rushton's book on setting up my Synology NAS DSM 6.0 has been the best spent money and has helped me get up and running in a small amount of time. No nonsense, easily understood step-by-step recommendations were what I needed. I highly recommend his guide. I got it in form, so that I could read his instructions while working in the Synology DiskStation at the same time. Overall, a fine companion piece to my 1st NAS experience.
The Synology disk station is a great tool, but if you have very limited
IT knowledge as I do you need this book to help you get it set up correctly on your network and to help you set up files, user accounts and manage this great but complicated device. I set up my Synology without the help of this book only to realize it was not doing what I wanted it to do. I bought the book, read through it page by page. Eventually, I realized I had to start over and reset my disk station to factory setting and then walk through the set up using this book. It made it simple and helped me understand the process better. Until I got this book my disk station was worthless to me because of my misunderstanding of how it all works together. Now the disk station is a great tool that I use all the time - very powerful.
